The ORIGINAL Low Mount Alternator Bracket
Due to the fact that we assisted in the original design of this bracket back in 2001, we have more experience regarding the installation and use than anyone else ! The billet low mount alternator kit allows for easy alternator installation when using an electric water pump. With this bracket, an electric fuel pump must be used since the alternator is positioned where the fuel pump normally resides. The bracket is available in 4 anodized colors- red, blue, black and clear . We also have billet fuel pump block off plates in matching colors. The bracket will work with most motor plates and elephant ears as well as stock mounts. All of the brackets we sell are machined to accept a special crank trigger bracket that can be mounted to the front of the alternator bracket.
While the bracket was originally designed to use a Denso 50 amp alternator. We have found that a Delco style 100 amp alternator also fits. The 100 amp alternator is larger and heavier than the 50 amp, but is the most common choice, due to the higher output. With some slight modifications to the tension adjuster arm, we have found that the new MSD Billet 160 amp alternator will also fit. It is posible other alternators may fit, it's a matter of test fitting them in order to find out. A stock Chrysler alternator will not work- it is too large in diameter.
When mounting the alternators mentioned above, the shim kit included with the bracket will allow the drive belt to be aligned with a stock water pump pulley. What this means is, if you have a stock damper and a stock crank pulley, you can drive a stock water pump and the low mounted alternator. This gets a little tricky when aftermarket dampers come into the mix. Some dampers have different offsets for mounting the crank pulley. We have the information needed to fit aftermarket dampers with a pulley and can assist you in selecting the correct crank pulley. We have two different billet crank pulleys with special offsets, as well as a machinable crank hub spacer . We can also supply under driven stock depth crank pulleys from Moroso as well as pulleys from March.
The bracket is simple to install. It mounts using the two lower timing chain cover bolt holes on the right side of the engine- that's the passenger's side for those that don't know. The two thinest shims in the kit are used between the main bracket and the timing cover to make up for the lip one the timing cover-We inadvertantly put one of those shims on the top bolt as you can see in the picture..oops... Cast aluminum or billet aluminum timing chain covers like the one we carry may not need to use the shims. Some cast covers may require some minor clearancing to fit the bracket.
Once the main bracket is installed , mount the alternator directly to the top hole of the main bracket. Then attach the adjuster arm to the threaded hole on the alternator. There is a beveled washer in the shim kit that is to be used on the bolt that goes in the slot of the adjuster arm. This helps maintain the finish on the arm. At this point use the shims to make up the difference between the arm and the main bracket -just use what you need.
